Your Breath Already Knows How to Heal You
Breathing Through Grief: Finding Healing with Resurrect Breathwork
The transformative power of breathwork is something many have heard about but few truly understand—until it’s needed. In a deeply moving episode of Not Alone, host Melissa Sue Methvin opens up about her healing journey after the devastating loss of her husband. Grief had left her unable to function—unable to eat, sleep, or even breathe. Then, during a 10-minute breathwork session, something shifted. For the first time, she felt peace.
That session would become a turning point, not just in her grief, but in her relationship with her body and breath.
A Breath That Changes Everything
Melissa is joined by Jerame Mudick, founder of Reconnect MindBody and the creator of Resurrect Breathwork. His own story starts with anxiety, emotional suppression, and chronic physical tension—despite being a professional bodybuilder with the "perfect" lifestyle. Years of pushing through discomfort led him to a surprising realization: his breath was the missing link.
Despite a clean diet and strict routine, Jerame suffered from persistent gut pain and a constant feeling of being on edge. Breathwork was the first thing that allowed him to connect with—and begin healing—his nervous system from the inside out.
Breathwork That Meets You Where You Are
Resurrect Breathwork doesn’t demand dramatics. It’s gentle, accessible, and incredibly personal. Some sessions bring deep relaxation. Others lead to cathartic emotional release. But no matter where someone is in their healing journey, the breath is there to meet them. “It’s about learning how to breathe, becoming aware of your breath and body,” Jerame explains. “Then slowly peeling back the layers.”
This accessibility is one of the reasons his approach resonates. It’s not about pushing harder—it’s about softening into presence.
A Healing Center Born From Vision
Shortly before the pandemic, Jerame received what he describes as a divine vision—during a quick nap. A blueprint for a healing center appeared in his mind, along with the message: “The people will need healing.” Despite opening at a time when most wellness centers were shutting their doors, Reconnect MindBody became a sanctuary. It offered tools for regulation and nervous system support when collective trauma was peaking and emotional resilience was stretched thin.
How Breath Heals: More Than Just Relaxation
The conversation also dives into the neurobiology behind breathwork. Consciously changing our breath activates parts of the nervous system typically running on autopilot. It builds a bridge between the conscious and subconscious mind, allowing stored emotions to surface—without needing to relive or explain them.
For Melissa and her children, breathwork (along with cold plunging) became a lifeline. “It’s a tool even my kids use,” she shares. “They’re learning how to process emotions instead of avoiding them.”
Releasing What the Body Remembers
Jerame’s insights into trauma and the body are striking. He describes years of feeling like he had “a vice grip on his gut” and never being able to take a full breath. After beginning breathwork, not only did he start releasing those patterns, but his voice changed—literally. His vocal tone deepened as tension left his body.
That physical transformation speaks volumes: our bodies do remember. And healing isn’t always cognitive—it’s also cellular.
An Invitation to Start
For anyone curious about breathwork but unsure where to begin, Jerame offers this simple advice: “Have intention without expectation.” Each person’s experience will be different. Some will cry. Some will feel light. Others may just feel more present. But all will begin to reconnect with the most underused tool they already have: their breath.
